- I don't have a problem with dropped connections on my Multi-Tech
- racks, and I've got at least 20 fully populated racks spread out over
- the US. I do have modems go bad every now and then and would like
- them to add a feature that will allow me to busy out the modem through
- at commands, or finally ship me my beta of the IP addressable
- controller card, but other than that I have no complaints.
- I've tried other rack mount modems, USR and Zypcom 28.8, Zycel when we
- were running 14.4, and looked at others, and basically found that the
- MultiTechs provide the best performance, especially for remote
- installations where you can't babysit them 24/7.
- One other thing, I was burned by USR Total Control Modems and won't
- try them again. I've heard that they have fixed the major problems,
- especially the overheating problem, but find that whenever I'm in a
- co-location space where someone is using TCs, they have the covers
- removed and external fans all over the racks. Not what I expect in
- something as pricey as the TC series.
- Last comment, if you have lots of money to throw away, look at the
- Ascend Max series. They look pretty but our eval unit was awful. The
- terminal server fuction was braindead, the modems wouldn't connect
- reliably, and there are *real* problems with the router functions.
- They appear to have fixed the connect problems since I see that Delphi
- and AOL both have a bunch of them, but I know they are still having
- problems with the routing functions.
